SCHOOL VISITS
School presentations
I have spoken to thousands of middle schoolers in schools around the country. I love introducing young readers to the world and themes of Once There Was and Bird of a Thousand Stories. We talk about connecting with a cultural heritage, the power of storytelling, and most importantly, MONSTERS AND MYTHICAL CREATURES. We talk about the enduring traditions that have kept these creatures alive in our imaginations for thousands of years, from the griffons and manticores of ancient Persia to the Pokemon of today. We think about what monsters mean, and why storytellers have used them for so long. And lastly, we take on a fun creative activity where the kids get to stretch their imaginations and describe the mythical creature that might already be living alongside them.
Writing workshops
I also lead writing workshops that dive into the craft of writing and storytelling in a conversational and curiosity-led format. Students can learn about the journey a book takes from idea to published work. I use these smaller sessions to share the principles and practices that have helped me grow as a writer, and that I continue to use today. These sessions are also a chance for aspiring young writers to ask questions about craft and the specific creative challenges they are trying to overcome.
I am happy to combine a large group presentation with smaller workshops. I have found that this structure gives the most interested and motivated students the opportunity to engage at a deeper and more meaningful level than a group presentation alone.
